Twinkle, twinkle little (but rather expensive) star

Star power

Star power

Now, it’s not like Johnny to be anti-science but I’m astounded by today’s news that experiments to see whether there’s any possibility that sun and star power can be used to generate energy instead of nasty old fossil fuels have doubled in price.

The bill for the – wait for it – International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor has rocketed into the stratosphere! It’s now going to cost us €7.2bn and the European Commission wants taxpayers in the EU to fork out an extra €1.4bn in 2012 and 2013.

That’s another £3 on everyone’s tax bill.

And it might not even work!

Perhaps the European Commission has got stars in its eyes.
